The debate goes on...
Yes, the debate continues as the Louisiana legislature debates the merits of some form of alternative high school diploma. What does a high school diploma mean anyway? I’ve hired people with high school diplomas who were terrible workers lacking the basic skills needed on the job. Seems like a simple solution would be to utilize the Louisiana Work Ready! certificate system adopted last year. At least that certificate has some indication of a persons basic skills. Come on folks...an attendance certificate?? Really??
It’s all about skills, and no diploma or degree given in America today really validates a person’s skills. Advanced degrees certainly indicate perseverance, but skills? If you go to Italy and study the Renaissance, return to the USA, you may be a great person with whom I would like to share time and conversation, but I don’t want to hire you unless you have skills.
