KeyTran FAQ's. What is said and what is real.

Q.  Does KeyTrain Address Low Level, Low Skilled Individuals?
A. In addition to having the best high level WorkKeys® instructional materials available, KeyTrain does indeed have courseware to address low performing individuals.  In fact our low level materials are the most comprehensive and effective Pre-WorkKeys materials on the market today.  We combine the most engaging beginning level curriculum available, with our exclusive “RealHumanSM Voice” audio.  This powerful combination means that comprehension and retention increases dramatically.  Studies prove that synthetic speech can cause confusion and reduced engagement by learners.  Comprehensive material for all audiences combined with “RealHuman Voice” make KeyTrain unbeatable.
Q.  Isn’t KeyTrain really just “test prep” material?
A. “Test Prep” sure does have a negative connotation to it doesn’t it?  After all, who wants their students to merely prep for a test?  Wouldn’t you rather have them master the skills?  Of course you would.  Saying that KeyTrain is “test prep” for WorkKeys demonstrates a fundamental lack of understanding about WorkKeys.  WorkKeys is a series of “applied academic” assessments.  “Test Prep” implies drill and memorization.  Drill and memorization will not help an individual perform on an applied assessment.  It is imperative that learners gain sufficient knowledge and fully understand how that knowledge should be used in a variety of situations.  That is applying knowledge.  KeyTrain’s results speak for themselves.  KeyTrain learners consistently out-perform all others in their WorkKeys scores.
Q.  Does KeyTrain have “gaps” in the curriculum?
A. Who would want a curriculum with gaps in it?  Not me, or you either I suspect.  ACT® is the sole decision maker on this point.  In fact, years ago ACT established a program to insure curriculum marketed for WorkKeys met their high standards.  It took hard work and commitment on our part, but KeyTrain was the first curriculum to be fully approved as meeting the WorkKeys Standards.  For 18 months, we remained the only curriculum to be fully approved.  Do you think ACT would approve something with “gaps”?  As the proven leader in the field, do you think we would sit idly by with “gaps” in our curriculum?  No way.  Not today, not ever.
Q.  Does KeyTrain have good Tech Support?
A. Well this one’s easy enough to test.  KeyTrain has 24/7 tech support via a toll free number.  24, means 24 hours a day, 7, means 7 days a week.  Problems are rare, but when they’re your problems, they’re huge.  Our goal is to have a solution to any problem within 15 minutes.  No answering machines…real people ready to help you…all hours, any day.  Pick up the phone and try it right now!
Q.  Can KeyTrain be updated very frequently if you use “RealHumanTM Voice”?
A. While it is true that it is harder to update the content, because it requires time and money to have professional talent record new audio.  The fact is, when your content meets the standards and is the most effective available, you don’t need frequent changes.  The benefits of our “RealHuman SM Voice” technology are undeniable in the learning process.  When changes are indeed warranted, KeyTrain is willing to spend the money to insure our customers have the best tool to help their learners.

As alway, the proof is in the pudding.  Look for yourself.  Ask questions.  Ask for results.  KeyTrain - The Premier Curriculum Solution for WorkKeys

It's That Time Again - National WorkKeys Conference in New Orleans

Yes, it’s time once again for the National WorkKeys Conference, and this year the destination is New Orleans.  It is May 2-4, and features such interesting speakers as Jeb Bush and Kathleen Blanco.  I’m not sure what either of these have to do with WorkKeys or the National Career Ready Certificate.  Florida has been on board with the NCRC program for 9 months now and from what I hear still hasn’t issued a single certificate.  There must be some problem with the organizations involved in the delivery.  Besides the governor, Florida only has 7 people attending the conference.  Not too good.

Louisiana on the other hand, has issued thousands of certificates.  I still don’t think a single business has heard of it.  A Career Readiness Certificate isn’t required for entry to or exit from the State network of Technical Colleges.  Is that because their graduates aren’t “Career Ready”?  Maybe things will improve one day.  All in all, the conference should be a good time.  Stop by and visit the KeyTrain booth.  Let us show you how your students can win with KeyTrain and WorkKeys.  If your goal is success, KeyTrain means Results.

WorkKeys in the News

Last week ACT made the long anticipated announcement of their National Career Readiness Certificate.  This is a portable credential designed to convey information to a potential employer about the skills of an individual.  ACT’s entrance into this initiative is most welcome as it has the potential to remove a lot of the politics from movements of this nature.

A Career Readiness Certificate was put in place in Louisiana several years ago and was almost completely lost due to politics.  After all, the program was put in place by the previous governor (R) and therefore has little value or merit to the current governor (D) regardless of how much merit the program has.  Now, anyone in any state can get a National Career Readiness Certificate...or get a national seal to place on their current certificate.  Great News… Follow this link to get the details... ACT has also established a web site for users to request their certificate.  Follow this link for that information.

Results. KeyTrain. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

As I travel around the country speaking to groups, I get quite a few routine questions about KeyTrain.  I thought I would share these with everyone and put the responses on the record.

Q:  Does KeyTrain have an Internet version?

A:  KeyTrain does indeed have an Internet version...in fact KeyTrain was the very first company to have a fully approved (by ACT) Internet based WorkKeys® curriculum.  Let me say that again...the first

Q:  Isn’t KeyTrain just “test prep” software?

A:  KeyTrain is not “test prep”.  This would imply that you can fool the WorkKeys assessments.  KeyTrain students always seem to get higher scores on WorkKeys, on Accuplacer, on the GED, on COMPASS, on the PSAE (Illinois), on the ACT, on the SAT, and more.  Has KeyTrain suddenly discovered the magic bullet that is “test prep” for almost any test??  It is much more likely that KeyTrain is an effective curriculum with more than enough depth to have a positive impact on virtually any assessment.

Q:  Who wrote KeyTrain?

A:  KeyTrain was written by a team of highly qualified curriculum development specialists.  These range from professors at colleges and community colleges to specialists in learning strategies...all experts in their fields and in instructional development.

If you have any more questions about KeyTrain, call or send them in and I will be happy to address them.  There is no better tool available anywhere to teach basic workplace skills than KeyTrain.  Compare and see for yourself.

Results. KeyTrain.

By all accounts the 2006 National WorkKeys Conference was a huge success. Nashville was a great venue and the attendance was over 500.  Many of the conversations centered around the number of States rolling out a Career Readiness Certificate (CRC) program.

That was the conversation.  The buzz was all KeyTrain.  The KeyTrain theme was results.  No matter what instrument you use to document progress...KeyTrain delivers the results you need.  Contact us for the documentation.  Help learners win with KeyTrain.  Results.  KeyTrain.image

Report from the National WorkKeys Conference

Just a few quick comments regarding the National WorkKeys Conference last week in Chicago.  Record attendance.  So many registered that ACT had to cut off the registration.  It was a great conference with many great WorkKeys related initiatives in progress around the country.  It seems that putting forth a viable “Career Readiness Certificate” initiative is foremost in many state’s plans.  Ironically over 80% of the conference presenters were KeyTrain customers.  That should tell you something if you are in the market for materials for critical skill building...KeyTrain helps learners win.  We invite you to compare KeyTrain to any of the alternatives...see for yourself.  If you want your clients, students or participants to win, choose KeyTrain for critical skill building.  Businesses choose KeyTrain, education chooses KeyTrain.  But, you have to look at it to compare.  Don’t take my word or someone else’s...call for your demo pack today.

The only problem here is that Governor Haley Barbour hasn’t demanded that Mississippi get involved in this growing national initiative. Can you imagine...over 50,000 Mississippi citizens could apply for their certificates having already completed the necessary assessments.  That’s right...some 13,000 students have been doing this each year for the past 5 or so years.  Hello...anyone listening??  Governor?? Bill says High Schools are Obsolete

Bill Gates made news over the weekend by stating that the nation’s High Schools are obsolete.  Duh??  I’ve said the same thing for a long time, for a lot less money and with much less fanfare.

From there the panel of states that are looking at education goes a little off base.  The focus still seems to be on preparing students for college.  Hello out there.  The statistics don’t show an overwhelming need for college.  Employers are guilty of assuming that because so many workers come to them with limited skills, they must require a degree if they expect to get skilled workers. An honest analysis would show that what is required is advanced education beyond high school. So, from that standpoint high schools are failing.  Students leave schools without the desire for or the ability to succeed in advanced education.

I would argue that reform should start a little earlier...perhaps middle or elementary.  The vast majority of these schools still teach kids the way it was done 50 years ago.  “If it was good for me, then...” you might say.  Not so quick.  Education may be the only thing in society where change has been lacking.

John Leo: What Larry meant to say

"Yesterday I spoke bluntly at a closed academic conference and offered some possible explanations of why women are less represented than men in the upper reaches of math and science. In addition to the cost of the time women spend in bearing and raising children, I said that innate sexual differences may be playing a role.”

“This was a politically incorrect thing to say, but I believe it is true. An enormous literature on sexual differences has been piling up for 30 years or more. Everybody knows about this work, but it is one of the large elephants in the academic living room that nobody is supposed to notice. It is officially invisible. Careers can end if you see it.”

WorkKeys, Louisiana and Leadership...really??

Jessica Fender had an interesting piece in The Advocate, Baton Rouge’s paper. The story tells of an exam that could benefit dropouts.  A “tailor-made test” to predict how dropouts would perform in the Community College program.  I don’t know where to start on this one.  I guess this is going to be a combo of ACT assessments and WorkKeys assessments...or is ACT up to something new.

When Impressions Matter More Than Results

When Impressions Matter More Than Results
by Trevor Bothwell
07 January 2005

Standardized tests have been implemented by many states precisely because we often cannot trust many of our public school teachers and administrators, who have methodically dumbed down academic standards over the past few decades through their condemnation of fact-based instructional methods and student discipline.

President calls for more college grads...

Somewhere in the President’s acceptance speech last night W called for increased funding for community colleges.  I can go along with that.  Later he said that he wanted more people to start off in the working world with a college degree.  That needs a bit of clarification.  There are plenty of degreed individuals working at Starbucks, Barnes and Noble, Outback and other places.  This is probably not the careers they desire not anticipated during college.  A degree is great...that indicates discipline and perseverance...but skills are trump.  Most community colleges are dominated by “skills” or “trades” programs, and that’s where the focus need to be.  But, that doesn’t sound as sexy in a speech, I guess.

ClozePro...pretty slick software from Crick

First let me say that I am a pretty harsh critic of software.  It not only has to work, it needs to look good doing it.  Today I spent some time with ClozePro from Crick Software.  ClozePro is a tool designed to create Cloze activities.  Cloze activities are reading activities where words or portions of sentences are missing and the learner is prompted to fill in the missing parts.  Talk about easy...this is it.  First, I surfed to a web site with the Mark Twain classic Huck Finn.  Then I copied a paragraph from the first chapter and pasted it directly into ClozePro.  Then simply by highlighting certain words and pushing a button to remove the text, I created an activity.  I could also highlight a word and choose to remove all instances of that word.  The result is a computer based activity of fill in the blanks, with record keeping going on behind the scenes. On top of that, you can print these as activity worksheets. Great for all ages, including special needs students and adults.  Creating high-quality language activities has never been easier.  All this power and pizazz for $199 for a single user.  Evaluation CD’s are available.  Here is a link to the ClozePro product brochure in PDF.

Browser Wars?

Do you have trouble with pop ups?  Are you concerned with security while web surfing?  Do you get tired of all the browser windows that end up opened on your desktop?  I thought I would give you a little report on what has rapidly become my browser of choice.  A couple of months ago I switched to Firefox from the Mozilla folks.  I bet I haven’t had 3 pop ups since then.  That’s pretty nice, but I have come to like the tabbed browsing feature the best.  Firefox gives you the ability to open links into new tabs within the same browser window...that is an awesome feature.  Oh yeah, it even loads the pages faster.  Did I mention that it’s free?  Firefox uses extensions (think plug ins) to add functionality if you desire more.  I added an extension to open pages in Internet Explorer...why you might ask, if Firefox is so good?  Well there are still some lazy web developers out there that don’t create pages compliant with standards...they just make them work in IE...which doesn’t always adhere to standards either...so, when I run into one of those situations, I just right click on the page and choose “open in IE” and voila...the page appears...usually with a pop up or two.  Anyway...go to Mozilla if you are interested.

OK...regular visitors to this site know that I don’t really get into politics here...it’s just not the place.  When I say regular visitors...I include a Cameron parish visitor.  Anyway, the headlines today deal with the comments that the Federal Reserve Chairman, Alan Greenspan, made yesterday regarding benefits.  By benefits he means Social Security, Medicare, etc.  Anything the country owes to the retiring population.  His comments have caused a stir because he plainly and honestly states that we don’t have enough money to pay everyone.  Plain and simple.  Maybe he should run from President.  I want politicians who will stand up and tell the truth...no sugar coating, and stop promising everyone the moon to get elected.  I only make so much money.  I can’t pay for everything for everyone, although some would call me rich and say that I should pay more.  By all means take more of my money and give it to someone else.  That’ll fix everything.  Do any of you younger people think you will ever see a nickel of “Social Security”?  And yet, you are swayed by the empty promises of politicians.  I doubt I ever see it...buy I pay 15% (self employed) to Washington for it.  I really hope it just goes to my mother.  Hey...I’ve got an idea...rather than pay Washington, how about I just send a check to my mother each month?  More later…

What if you held a meeting and no one came...

You’ve heard the adage that the only constant is change.  I understand that change is a difficult thing for everyone...but in my experience it seems like it’s a much bigger challenge for educators.  We recently encountered a situation where educators were invited to a training session for the equipment they are going to be using during the coming school year.  The offer on the table was for them to receive a flat fee per day for a three day session plus their meals.  Less than 50% attendance.  Absolutely amazing.  No coincidence is the fact that these same missing instructors come from some of the lowest performing schools...which leads us to the age old question.  Which came first, the chicken or the egg.  Some would say...look at our infrastructure...it’s terrible...how can you expect me to excel??  Last time I checked...buildings can’t fix people, but people can fix buildings.  Off with their heads I say.  Our students, our children deserve better.  If you teach and you have this attitude....do us all a favor.  Retire, find some other line of work where your lousy attitude won’t infect countless others.  OK...enough already...I’m coming down from my soapbox.

Ongoing discussion of the need for college...

The four year colleges in this country continue to help perpetuate the idea that there is no real success in the working world without passing through their hallowed halls.  Is that really so?  Bill Gates and Michael Dell, they would quickly point out are rare exceptions.  Are they?  What about the many people with strange and wonderful sounding college degrees that are currently unable to find work in their field?  Who is responsible for them?  I spoke with a very nice lady in Arkansas recently whose son had a degree in sports management.  Sounds great doesn’t it?  Seen very many openings in the classifieds lately?  Now don’t get me totally wrong, this is America, and you can study anything you please...especially if I don’t have to help you pay for it.  Just don’t whine when you can’t find a job in that field.  Over 60% of the new jobs created in the US don’t require college...but they do require skills obtained after high school.  Parents, urge your kids into programs and institutions that can build their skills...yes, we are moving to a knowledge based society...but skills are the application of that knowledge.  Skills matter...and around the country many groups are realizing that and moving toward using WorkKeys from ACT to measure those skills.  KeyTrain builds foundational skills needed by an increasingly technical workforce.  Help students win with KeyTrain and WorkKeys.  We all win.

Anybody goin' to San Antone...

...or Phoenix...nah.  Back in the office from last week’s Workforce Innovations 2004 conference in lovely San Antonio Texas.  We were there exhibiting on behalf of KeyTrain.  It was very nice and pretty well attended.  KeyTrain was the only WorkKeys Instructional Solution provider to exhibit.  It continues to demonstrate our confidence and commitment to the growth and development of the workforce.  San Antonio is a nice city for a conference, people were lovely and the food was great.  Our thanks to the many people that visited us at the booth and expressed an interest in KeyTrain.  This week finds us at the Mississippi ACTE conference at Hinds Community College - Raymond Campus.  See you there!

Off to a fresh start...

Well, we wrapped up the LACTE conference in Lafayette...I must say that it wasn’t too impressive.  The attendence was quite poor and that left many of the vendors, who by the way foot the bill for most of any conference, talking to each other.  Our best prospects don’t usually come from the ranks of exhibitors.  Anyway, we’re off to a new week and already looking to the start of a new school year.  Local schools crank up on August 10th...barely a month away.  Get ready boys and girls...a new year is on us already.

Thanks...

I am a bit remiss for not thanking the many repeat visitors to this site.  We often don’t know who you are but we see where you come from and how often you visit.  I thank you.  I also want to thank the many contributors and people writing with suggestions for content material for this site.  We have been quite busy over the past several weeks moving to new office space and reorganizing all of our computer equipment and software stockpiles.  It has not left us with much time for web site contributions.  All of that is about to change with more new and fresh content, opinions, etc. on the way.  I wanted to comment yesterday about the situation in Texas with the Teachers retiring and taking advantage of a loophole...but, no...that may be just a bit too political for this site.  But, I might anyway...but later…

Similar story, different day.

I started to not say anything about this...but nah, I just can’t let it go.  I received an official bid announcement recently where one of the items out for bid was “Software to be as WIN WorkKeys...” OK, here I go again.  Either some folks are totally confused, leaping to conclusions, or somewhat misled.  I’m not sure which, but I will go on record again saying it is wrong.  WIN is not WorkKeys.  WorkKeys is a registered trademark of ACT.  WIN is an acronym for Worldwide Interactive Network, who makes instructional materials for the WorkKeys Employment System.  KeyTrain is also instructional material for WorkKeys.  I happen to think KeyTrain is the better of the two.  I invite...no, I challenge you to compare for yourself.  You will agree.  If quality, engaging, cost-effective instructional material for WorkKeys is what you are after, KeyTrain is the answer.

The debate goes on...

Yes, the debate continues as the Louisiana legislature debates the merits of some form of alternative high school diploma.  What does a high school diploma mean anyway?  I’ve hired people with high school diplomas who were terrible workers lacking the basic skills needed on the job.  Seems like a simple solution would be to utilize the Louisiana Work Ready! certificate system adopted last year.  At least that certificate has some indication of a persons basic skills.  Come on folks...an attendance certificate?? Really??

It’s all about skills, and no diploma or degree given in America today really validates a person’s skills.  Advanced degrees certainly indicate perseverance, but skills?  If you go to Italy and study the Renaissance, return to the USA, you may be a great person with whom I would like to share time and conversation, but I don’t want to hire you unless you have skills.

Really folks...measure skills with the WorkKeys Employment System from ACT and the business folks will understand.

I'm OK with a day or two of this guy...

Here is a link to an article from the Washington Post that I found interesting. You may have to sign up at their web site to view the article but to do so is free.  The interesting part is the essay written by Richard Chapleau about being Education Emperor for a day.  It should come as no surprise to regular visitors here that I don’t agree with all of Mr. Chapleau’s ideas.  I think he is spot on some of them.  I do deplore the attitude of parents and modern culture when it comes to the raising of young children...just leave it to the schools.
Now I am even more impressed by the valedictory address at my son’s High School graduation several years ago that referenced the valedictorian’s favorite poem from which he quoted...”...I do not like them Sam I am...” Perhaps that background in some way attributed to where this young man was that day.

I have already been chastised for not adding any sports commentary to this site.  So I would be even more remiss if I didn’t take the opportunity to call attention to the amazing accomplishment of Randy Johnson with his recent perfect game.  Amazing...and at 40.  There, how’s that?

Mississippi Workforce Development...a case for WorkKeys

If there ever was a case for incorporating the WorkKeys Employment system from ACT into your workforce and economic development initiative, Mississippi has one.  Beyond all of the real benefits to employers of all shapes and sizes...one huge reason is that over 13,000 newly eligible members of the Mississippi workforce each year have already taken 3 of the WorkKeys assessments.  Yep...that’s right.  Over 13,000 each year have taken 3 WorkKeys assessments.  Talk about a report card on your emerging workforce.  Hello...anyone in Mississippi interested in knowing in real terms how your schools are doing?  how skilled your emerging workforce is?  Contact us if you would like to know more.

WorkKeys in Mississippi

Just as a bit of background I will fill you in on what has gone on with the WorkKeys Employment System here.  Mississippi, for several years now, has been testing all of it’s vocational or technical high school students with 3 of the WorkKeys assessments. Applied Math, Reading for Information, and Locating Information.  Some see this testing as just a validation of the particular vocational program.  It shouldn’t be.  If one hand knew what the other was doing...the folks from the Workforce Development side of the house would have a report card on a nice size group of Mississippi’s emerging workforce. I bet the Nissan folks in Madison would like information like that.  Maybe that’s too much to ask.  Anyway...many schools have selected KeyTrain to help their students build skills. It works, it builds skills, students like it, and they move levels.  Students and schools win with KeyTrain. Now if we can get Workforce Development on board, that will be a big win for Mississippi.

WorkKeys...and the name confusion

Just a short note to illustrate an earlier point.  The WorkKeys Employment System is produced by ACT of Iowa City, Iowa.  In the last few days someone from a State Department of Education did a search at a popular engine for “win workkeys tests for assistant teachers”.  They found this site.  WIN is not WorkKeys.  KeyTrain is not WorkKeys.  Also, WorkKeys is more than just assessments.  Someone at the State level should understand these distinctions...but search for yourself and you will see that many still don’t get it.  If you need assessments for testing teaching assistants or paraprofessionals...go to ACT.  If you simply want the best instructional material available to help prepare to take the WorkKeys assessments...contact us for information about KeyTrain.  Simply the best.

Creating your own Interactive Training

Often people will ask us how they can create their own interactive training courseware similar to the safety training software from Mastery Technologies.  It’s actually quite easy.  We offer another piece of Mastery Software called MODIFY that will allow you to start with an empty course shell and build any type of training course you desire.  Fill the shell with videos, still images, powerpoint slides, audio, ask questions to verify the knowledge gained...and deliver it on your LAN.  The possibilities are limitless.  So if you think you want to create your own interactive training course, follow this link and sign up for a demo of one of our safety, or OSHA compliance titles.  You can create a course that looks and works just like these. Your course will keep student records the same way...all this with no programming.

CAT1...coming to a Computer near You

Well...I will begin by saying that I am somewhat surprised...but not really.  We continue to see a high level of interest in the CAT1 program from the Technological Fluency Institute.  The CAT1 program was created as part of a grant at Pittsburg State University (home of the Gorillas).  The grant involved using technology in teaching or with Teachers...have to go back to my research to clean up this story, but that’s close enough for now.  Anyway...CAT1 is an online assessment and tutorial for computer technology.  It measures your savvy in different areas with a number of performance objectives.  If you don’t feel ready for any of the assessment objectives, you can just go straight to the tutorial and learn how to perform the objective.  When comfortable, you can proceed to the objective.  The end result is a level of Technological Fluency.  Professional Development folks...imagine having teachers and instructors that show up for your training sessions and they are already reasonably proficient with the computer??  All participants singing from the same music.

National WorkKeys Conference Reminder

Just a reminder to all of those still on the fence out there in regards to attending a conference that relates to WorkKeys.  ACT is hosting the official 7th annual WorkKeys conference in Orlando.  Please don’t confuse this with any other conferences that are being held.  With all the confusion surrounding WorkKeys and Instructional material it would be easy to think some conferences are official ACT Venues.  The ACT WorkKeys conference is vendor-neutral and therefore is bound to be much more informative.  You will hear best practices and successes of everyone involved in WorkKeys activities...not just a particular vendor.  Oh well, If you only have enough resources to attend one conference this year, make certain that it is the official ACT National WorkKeys Conference Join us for a time of fun, food and information at the ACT National WorkKeys conference, May 12-14...oh yeah...did I say fun??

WorkKeys Instructional Solutions... Still Confusing after all these years

I had a call just a while ago from a very nice lady asking about WorkKeys.  She was confused because of some names that she read on some documents that she received.  That lead her to believe that a particular instructional material and WorKKeys were one in the same.  This can be a little deceptive.  I am pretty sure it wasn’t intentional on anyone’s part...just add a little confusion and see if we don’t get some business from it.  Well, as I try to set the record straight again.  ACT is the sole producer of WorkKeys...other folks produce curriculum.  So...if it’s curriculum you’re after...good solid instructional material, the take the Pepsi Challenge folks, put KeyTrain side by side with anything and see for yourself.  Better yet, Ask for a evaluation program and put some students through them and see the results.  Students quickly move levels in KeyTrain.  Students respond negatively to others.  Why spend good money on something Students won’t benefit from or may not even use.  Oh well, enough venting for a Friday...have a great weekend.

Interested in Interactive Training?

There seems to be a growing interest in interactive multimedia training programs.  Technical Schools have expressed quite a bit of interest in our Master Technician’s Toolbox.  The Toolbox concept is based around the use of an 80 GB Snap Server as a storage unit for Interactive Multimedia Courseware from Mastery Technologies.  Hence, the toolbox.  A toolbox is supposed to be a place to store the tools needed to get the job done.  In this case it becomes a training resource for any industrial skills training program.  Just plug into your network and start training.  We pre load the unit with your choice of content from areas such as Automotive Technology, Building Trades, Residential Construction, New and Displaced Workers, Collision Repair, Welding, Drafting and more.  Contact us and see how a Master Technician’s Toolbox can benefit your program.

High School Diplomas and a case for WorkKeys?

Here is a Link to an interesting article in Education Week (you need to register to view - it’s free) that talks about the value and meaning (or lack thereof) of a high school diploma.  To me this is a perfect opportunity to integrate the WorkKeys Employment System from ACT.  This is a criterion referenced system that compares the skills of an individual to those needed for a job.  Some folks in the academic world still don’t like the idea of that..even though the message from business is still the same..."We need people with more skills...we don’t need people with upper level calculus, just better problem solving skills.” Oh well, read the article and form your own impression.  Next I’ll talk about the folks in Grand Rapids and their plan to use WorkKeys as the basis of their “Guaranteed Diploma”.

Parapro Training Solution

Those of you paraprofessionals or teaching assistants out there know what is going on.  The No Child Left Behind legislation requires that you be “highly qualified” and that is verified by some type of certification.  Certification comes from taking some type of assessment.  Some states have created their own...some folks just love to spend money.  Other states have looked at available assessment systems and selected one in order to expedite the process.  The system that many states have settled on is the WorkKeys system from ACT.  WorkKeys, after all, looks at the skills most likely used on the job, and does so in a manner very similar to actual usage in the workplace.  There is nothing to be feared here.  Just brush up on your skills and you’ll do just fine.  KeyTrain has put software for Applied Mathematics, Reading for Information and Writing in a special package for paraprofessionals seeking to prepare for the WorkKeys assessments.  We are happy to offer that package here.  The cost is $50 plus $5 shipping and handling.  You can use your Visa or Mastercard.  Just click on the “buy now” button in the right column of our home page.  Click here to return to the home page.

Interactive Multimedia Software Redux

Just a couple of reflections on the Interactive Multimedia Software from Mastery Technologies.  Their strength has been software.  Everyone knows that to create multimedia training software you have to be a computer programmer right?  Not so.  Mastery has created such a powerful software platform that all you have to be is a content creator.  We have off-the-shelf courses for all varieties of topics.  Automotive Training, Welding Training, Safety Training, Displaced Worker Training, Residential Construction Training, Refrigeration, HVAC, Electrical Training...all manner of highly interactive, multimedia training on these topics.  The common thread through all of these is high quality video content.  The Mastery software platform allows for easy multimedia course creation, interactivity, with a learner management system (LMS) already built right in.  Now, an educator or trainer that can create the video or still-image content, can easily convert that to a powerful Interactive Multimedia training course without being a programmer.  Contact us for the specifics.

Clearing up some questions...maybe.

This is just a brief clarification.  We get questions from time to time regarding KeyTrain and also to a lesser degree, other products.  The biggest confusion that people seem to have comes early on from non really understanding what WorkKeys was all about.  If you offered instruction for WorkKeys and you said as much in the title or descriptive documents, then it would easy to see how someone might think that you and WorkKeys were one in the same.  Not so Kemosabe.  The WorkKeys Employment System is the sole property of the good folks from ACT.  I’ve even heard people say “ACT wrote our curriculum”...not so.  ACT did not want to get in the business of writing instructional materials...they intentionally left that to others, So, if it’s instructional material that you need for the WorkKeys System...KeyTrain is the answer to all your questions.  Take a look for yourself.  Get demo Cd’s from curriculum providers and compare for yourself.  That should be enough for most folks.  Contact us for more info.

More NCLB Comments (No Child Left Behind)

Since the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Legislation was signed there has been a huge outcry from all sectors.  Some see it as a godsend, some as a demon to education.  Some see it as socialism from the Republicans.  Whichever your viewpoint, there are some things contained in NCLB that are worthwhile goals...but goals that will likely offend those effected.  The goal for today’s discussion is the one for technical literacy contained within Title II of NCLB.  Let’s face it...Technology is a powerful influence in our society and we can ill afford to have students leaving our very expensive educational system without at least a basic grasp of it.  If that is a given, then it seems logical that all Teachers should meet or exceed the same qualifications.  If NCLB went missing tomorrow, those goals should remain in place.  There is some truth to the idea of being a master of technology or a slave to it.  Learn Technology and let Technology work for you.  Students and Teachers alike.  See our information about the CAT1 program from the Technical Fluency Institute for more ideas about easily complying with the NCLB requirements or contact us toll free.
