Epilog Announces the new Mini
The interest level is still high in the line of laser etching engraving and cutting equipment from Epilog. We still do samples for our educational customers when they call, but the big news recently is the addition of a new model to their lineup. The Mini. The Mini sports a reduced price tag with very little sacrifice in performance. The work envelop is 12x18 with 4” in the Z axis. Contact us if you would like more information. We will connect you to the dealer for your area. If you are in Louisiana, Arkansas or Mississippi, we can supply you with some engraved samples and a quick quotation.

High School Diplomas and a case for WorkKeys?
Here is a Link to an interesting article in Education Week (you need to register to view - it’s free) that talks about the value and meaning (or lack thereof) of a high school diploma. To me this is a perfect opportunity to integrate the WorkKeys Employment System from ACT. This is a criterion referenced system that compares the skills of an individual to those needed for a job. Some folks in the academic world still don’t like the idea of that..even though the message from business is still the same..."We need people with more skills...we don’t need people with upper level calculus, just better problem solving skills.” Oh well, read the article and form your own impression. Next I’ll talk about the folks in Grand Rapids and their plan to use WorkKeys as the basis of their “Guaranteed Diploma”.

Protectionist Schools?? An extremely interesting article for people concerned about Education
I just read this article and was quite astounded. Sometimes people on the outside see things a little differently than we do. One of the most difficult things to come to grips with is change. But, we have changed...and maybe it’s time to change again.

Parapro Training Solution
Those of you paraprofessionals or teaching assistants out there know what is going on. The No Child Left Behind legislation requires that you be “highly qualified” and that is verified by some type of certification. Certification comes from taking some type of assessment. Some states have created their own...some folks just love to spend money. Other states have looked at available assessment systems and selected one in order to expedite the process. The system that many states have settled on is the WorkKeys system from ACT. WorkKeys, after all, looks at the skills most likely used on the job, and does so in a manner very similar to actual usage in the workplace. There is nothing to be feared here. Just brush up on your skills and you’ll do just fine. KeyTrain has put software for Applied Mathematics, Reading for Information and Writing in a special package for paraprofessionals seeking to prepare for the WorkKeys assessments. We are happy to offer that package here. The cost is $50 plus $5 shipping and handling. You can use your Visa or Mastercard. Just click on the “buy now” button in the right column of our home page.
