Similar story, different day.

I started to not say anything about this...but nah, I just can’t let it go.  I received an official bid announcement recently where one of the items out for bid was “Software to be as WIN WorkKeys...” OK, here I go again.  Either some folks are totally confused, leaping to conclusions, or somewhat misled.  I’m not sure which, but I will go on record again saying it is wrong.  WIN is not WorkKeys.  WorkKeys is a registered trademark of ACT.  WIN is an acronym for Worldwide Interactive Network, who makes instructional materials for the WorkKeys Employment System.  KeyTrain is also instructional material for WorkKeys.  I happen to think KeyTrain is the better of the two.  I invite...no, I challenge you to compare for yourself.  You will agree.  If quality, engaging, cost-effective instructional material for WorkKeys is what you are after, KeyTrain is the answer.

The debate goes on...

Yes, the debate continues as the Louisiana legislature debates the merits of some form of alternative high school diploma.  What does a high school diploma mean anyway?  I’ve hired people with high school diplomas who were terrible workers lacking the basic skills needed on the job.  Seems like a simple solution would be to utilize the Louisiana Work Ready! certificate system adopted last year.  At least that certificate has some indication of a persons basic skills.  Come on folks...an attendance certificate?? Really??

It’s all about skills, and no diploma or degree given in America today really validates a person’s skills.  Advanced degrees certainly indicate perseverance, but skills?  If you go to Italy and study the Renaissance, return to the USA, you may be a great person with whom I would like to share time and conversation, but I don’t want to hire you unless you have skills.

Really folks...measure skills with the WorkKeys Employment System from ACT and the business folks will understand.

I'm OK with a day or two of this guy...

Here is a link to an article from the Washington Post that I found interesting. You may have to sign up at their web site to view the article but to do so is free.  The interesting part is the essay written by Richard Chapleau about being Education Emperor for a day.  It should come as no surprise to regular visitors here that I don’t agree with all of Mr. Chapleau’s ideas.  I think he is spot on some of them.  I do deplore the attitude of parents and modern culture when it comes to the raising of young children...just leave it to the schools.
Now I am even more impressed by the valedictory address at my son’s High School graduation several years ago that referenced the valedictorian’s favorite poem from which he quoted...”...I do not like them Sam I am...” Perhaps that background in some way attributed to where this young man was that day.

Master Technician's Toolbox Content

For those who have been looking at the Master Technician’s Toolbox, I wanted to make sure that you know that the majority of the content available is from Delmar.  If you are interested in safety courses, then there are numerous other content providers.  Top notch interactive video content is the common denominator.  Delmar produces some of the best video content for education and technical skills training available anywhere.  Here is the link to the Toolbox PDF file.
